A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
